"Art is a selective re-creation of reality according to an artist's metaphysical value-judgments. An artist recreates those aspects of reality which represent his fundamental view of man's nature." - Marcel Proust

Susan Powers is a self-taught ceramist. Her biology and chemistry
courses in college have helped her overcome many of the technical difficulties
inherent in a process conditioned by physical and chemical transformations. Her
aesthetics have evolved from a lifelong interest in art and architecture and a
wanderlust that has led her to unusual places and strange experiences. She has the temperament that likes to build, to create, in other words, to make things!
Susan makes objects meant to enhance small and individual worlds. Her pieces -
planters, vases and platters - are open and protected spaces where something can
happen. They are meant to be completed. She imagines someone planting an orchid,
selecting and arranging flowers, fruits, or personally significant objects, not
habitually and automatically but carefully and lovingly. In doing so, she hopes
that this someone would notice many things, not just the clay pot, but the beauty of
living organisms and the substances they require - earth, air, water, light, love and attention.
Perhaps her pieces can provide an opportunity to meditate on these basic and
elemental things and to get closer to them, in small but habitual ways. Susan
believes there is a joy and consolation to be found in these quiet daily
rituals.
